ZeroAvia named 2022 BNEF Pioneer for Decarbonizing Aviation
April 14, 2022
  • Bloomberg New Energy Finance selects ZeroAvia as the winner in the Aviation category from an applicant pool of over 270

  • ZeroAvia’s hydrogen-electric powertrains for commercial aircraft, recognized as a leading transformative technology

Hollister, Calif., April 14, 2022 — ZeroAvia, a leader in zero-emission technology for commercial air travel, has been named a winner of the 2022 Bloomberg New Energy Finance Pioneer program for its innovations towards decarbonizing the aviation sector. The company is designing and developing zero-emission, hydrogen-electric propulsion systems to address a variety of markets, initially targeting a 500-mile range in 10–20 seat aircraft used for commercial transport.

Val Miftakhov, CEO and founder of ZeroAvia, said:

“We are honored to be named a BNEF Pioneer. Being included in such a prestigious program further proves that our technology is imperative for the aviation sector’s full climate impact to be addressed. We are initially targeting the regional commercial aviation market with our hydrogen-electric powertrain for 19-seat aircraft with trips up to 500 miles. However, as we scale, we will implement the technology into larger aircraft, be able to fly for longer trips, and cover other aviation use cases, including cargo, agriculture, and more. We believe that with our zero-emission technology, we will significantly impact the climate change and air quality impact of aviation, saving 115 MegaTons of CO2 emissions by 2033, and placing the industry on track to eliminate its climate impact altogether in the coming decades.”

ZeroAvia has secured experimental certificates for its two prototype aircraft, achieved flight test milestones, and is on track for commercialization in 2024. The company has secured funding from notable investors, including United Airlines, Alaska Air Group, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Amazon Climate Pledge Fund, and Shell Ventures.

This year, the Bloomberg NEF Pioneer program set out to find the most innovative organizations attempting to solve three distinct challenges: providing round-the-clock zero-emissions power, scaling long-term carbon removal technologies, and finally, decarbonizing aviation. ZeroAvia was announced as a
finalist on February 15, will be in attendance at the BNEF Summit in New York on April 19-20, 2022, and available for questions at the company’s pioneers booth.
